There are many ways that you can help reduce the use of conflict minerals in the U.S. If you are a business owner then you can choose to refuse the use of conflict minerals in your business. If you are a consumer of electronics, choose brands that vow to use conflict free minerals. A recent brand to advocate for conflict free minerals is Apple, who does not use conflict minerals in their phones. If you do not have the money to afford items that use conflict free minerals, one way you can help is by recycling your unused electronic devices. In the U.S. only 9% of handheld electronics are recycled. Recycling electronics is a gateway to stop the use of conflict minerals. As there are more and more electronics recycled, companies can rely more on recycled materials instead of using the conflict materials from Congo. Recycling also helps make an impact in other countries in the world. For example, some of our electronic waste is exported to places like China and Ghana where the people are impoverished. There are groups of children there who burn the electronics so that they can remove tiny amounts of metals such as copper, gold, cadmium, and silver. The children hardly make any money from recycling e-waste and end up hurting themselves in the process. The children wind up inhaling many toxins in the process of recycling the electronics which can lead to neurological deficiency as well as other diseases.
It is easy to fail to recognize the impact that we have on other countries. That is why we encourage you to recycle as many of your devices that you no longer use as possible. There will be an electronic recycling drive at Chaminade Julienne high school in Dayton, OH on April 5th. All electronic devices are welcome (except television sets) and directions can be found at www.cjeagles.org. See the flyer below for more information. If you have any questions about the event or this site, contact us under the tab labeled "contact." Please consider recycling your old electronics.

What We Did
We helped run an e-cylcing event at our high school (Chaminade Julienne Dayton, OH). Through this event we received over 14,000 pounds of recycled electronics from over 150 people. This event helps lessen our carbon footprint as well as decreased the reliance on conflict minerals from outside sources.
